Find out how design can set you apart, help you grow, and solve your toughest challenges. At IDEO, we’re often asked to share what we know about design thinking. Here, we introduce design thinking, how it came to be, how it is being used, and steps and tools for mastering it. You’ll find our particular take on design thinking, as well as the perspectives of others.

The Design Thinking Association develops materials and programs to help practitioners raise their standards of practice. We create a global community through a web platform, events, networking and opportunities to share and discuss design thinking. We’ve developed designthinking.ideo.com in response to that request. ExperienceInnovation is a workshop in innovation, giving teams meaningful experience with design thinking. Whatever challenge your organization might face, you don’t have to solve it alone.

Building an Accelerator for Climate Leaders

While learning and doing design thinking, teachers build their creative muscles and connect to diverse partner organizations that are committed to bringing their solutions to life. We’ve learned a lot over the years, and we’d like to share our insights. We’ve seen design thinking transform lives and organizations, and on occasion we’ve seen it fall short when approached superficially, or without a solid foundation of study. Design thinking takes practice; and as a community of designers, entrepreneurs, engineers, teachers, researchers, and more, we’ve followed the journey to mastery, and developed maps that can guide others.

Exercises to Build Your Creative Confidence

Once you’ve got your solution to a point where it’s ready to be used, it’s time to move on to the next and final phase. Identify patterns of behavior, pain points, and places where users have a difficult time doing something—these all lend to tremendous opportunity. If you can, put yourself in their situation so you can see what their experience is, and feel what they feel. The first phase is all about observing the end-user, learning, and being open to creative possibilities. That’s why the folks at IDEO strategically put users at the core of everything they do—a process they refer to as human centered design.

At IDEO, we believe that applying design thinking with integrity means continuing to deepen and refine—to be lifelong learners and practitioners at the same time. IDEO executes this exercise by observing the user and putting itself in their shoes. They know if researchers can feel the same what people feel, how their experience is really like, they can use that information to drive their design solutions. And this process has made them one of America’s most influential and award-winning design firms.

In the handover phase, participants will begin to realize solutions through rapid revenue and cost modeling, capacity assessment, and implementation planning. In the creation phase, participants will work together in a workshop format to understand what they heard from the end-user in the previous step. The problem with adult toothbrushes was that they were hard for kids to hold. Since they were so small, they just flopped around in the kids’ hands and were difficult to use. Once you get feedback from your users, use that information to fuel the changes to your design.

Over the last few decades, they’ve designed hundreds of products, like the first computer mouse for Apple in 1980, the Palm Pilot in 1998, a school system in Peru, and the 25-foot mechanical whale used in the movie Free Willy, just to name a few. It requires a methodology, a general process and the development of skills in order to use it to solve problems. Understanding the methodology and developing the skills are by far the more important. Skills require practice, repetition and deep thinking in order to get good at them. Design Thinking for Libraries is an approach to improving libraries through creative problem-solving. A new collection of guide books to help us peer into the collective future.

The Field Guide is the latest in IDEO.org’s suite of teaching tools and a step forward in sharing the practice and promise of human-centered design with the social sector. In April 2015, IDEO.org launched an exciting new evolution of the HCD Toolkit the Field Guide to Human-Centered Design. This is the central philosophy that human centered design revolves around. Whether you’re designing physical or digital solutions, the process is the same, and it consists of six phases, which we'll outline next.

Design Pool and Spa offers a variety of top-notch services to ensure your inground pool and spa is always in peak condition. From opening and closings, safety cover sales and installation, repair of pumps, filters, and heaters, and weekly maintenance, your pool or spa will always be pristine. Our excellence in delivering quality swimming pools beyond expectations has allowed us to partner with some of California's best landscape design firms such as LDI and Valley Crest. We have been entrusted to construct beautiful public works at malls, community entrances, private installations at hotels and multi-housing complexes. Once the design is finalized, the Premier Pools & Spas team will begin construction of your pool.

Generations of Memories Built by Design Pool & Spa

Although there are a lot of factors that can affect the completion time of your project, we work very efficiently and strive to complete your project on time. The dark blue tiles on the perimeter-overflow spa (at right) provide a beautiful contrast against the pool’s aqua interior. It takes some time for the city to approve the permit, and we want to be as efficient as possible.

Pools

From the sweeping landscapes of San Bernardino and High Deserts to the bustling urban spaces of Riverside County, our reach extends across California's diverse communities. We cater to a broad range of cities, including but not limited to Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Victorville, Claremont, and Eastvale. No matter where you are in SoCal, we're committed to serving your pool and hardscape needs. Want to talk to us about your new pool, remodel, or other projects?

Rest assured, with Xtreme Pools and Hardscapes, your dream pool project will become a reality. Beginning with a thorough site analysis and detailed 3D design, we offer a visual representation of your pool before construction. Utilizing cutting-edge equipment and techniques, we guarantee top-notch quality and durability. It may be 50%, 40%, or maybe less but you will be saving a great amount based solely on the fact that you won’t be paying for the overheads that major pool companies carry. You won’t be paying for employees’ salaries and their commissions, managers’ salaries and their bonuses, or the company’s administration and office costs.

They built a dream pool for us within three months, making the process easy. We recommend Designer Custom Pools to anyone looking to build a dream pool. I am very pleased with the final result of the pool & spa designed and built by Designer Custom Pools. Justin came out to meet me in person and designed a gorgeous pool that I couldn't resist. I have a small yard, and he was able to design something perfect for my backyard.

But don’t worry - this is all set out on the Bluepools drawings. All existing features of your backyard are already taken into account. Pacific Outdoor Living’s Pool and Spa Division, we specialize in creating exotic and enchanting resorts, in your very own backyard. What better way to complete your home resort, then with a relaxing custom spa. No matter if you’re looking for a smaller more intimate spa design, or a larger hot tub to throw parties with friends, we have got you covered.

Our solar pool heating offering is different from electrical solar panels, but similar in that they are flat panels that would be attached to your south, southwest facing roof-line. As the sun bakes the panels, that warmth is transferred to the water and back to your pool. While sunny California does offer year-long sunshine your pool water will not be temperate for year round swimming unless heated. You can typically expect five months of comfortable naturally heated water, but may wish to extend your swim season further.

Before each treatment, patrons are treated to a warm welcome tea, a light bite, and a traditional Japanese footbath. If you’re not sure of which treatment to choose, the Tomoko Massage is a balanced treatment that combines Swedish techniques with hot stones. However, the highlight of the Tomoko is the Japanese Sake treatment which works on the energy centers of the face. When a pool has an attached raised spa, it offers the chance to incorporate the visual and audible appeal of a spillover (spillway). Oporto Fooding House & Wine Review Fourth Ward Houston

oporto fooding house & wine

A torta with chopped bits of well-done steak tastes like a good carne asada taco that wandered onto a French roll. But a chicken torta, overwhelmed by guacamole that spills out of the sides on first bite (I’m not sure I’ve ever complained before about getting too much guacamole on anything) doesn’t really move the needle. The guava cheese strudels, or Refugiados (“refugees”) are probably the next logical step in any visit to Porto’s, after the potato balls. Flaky pastry, as light and buttery as any viennoiserie in the city, shelters a mixture of tangy, soft cheese combined with the bright, tart fruit. It’s a Caribbean-meets-Continental-Europe mashup that makes Girl Talk look like a rank amateur. “I lived with an aunt who liked to do cakes and pastries,” Porto said in Spanish, recalling her early memories of food.

oporto fooding house & wine

HOUSTON RESTAURANT WEEKS ™

They knew they’d have to sell more than the cakes Porto had been baking in Cuba. To build up day-to-day business and foot traffic, they started selling Mexican conchas, doughnuts — whatever people wanted. But the refugiados (guava and cheese pastries) and cheese rolls, with their tangy, creamy fillings, remain excellent, as does a spinach feta empanada. Other empanadas and meat pies are decent but unremarkable, and the tamales are topped by those at some Latin American bakeries around town. The first thing you’ll notice at any Porto’s, at nearly any time of day, is the chaos. Dining room packed, food runners dodging those lurking to nab the first empty table, and of course, the impossibly long line, 40 or 50 deep.

Available all day

The Saturday-at-Disneyland-like crowds and long queues of people waiting to get pastries, sandwiches and snacks can be off-putting to the uninitiated, certainly. Because the second thing you notice at any Porto’s is how quickly the line moves. Porto’s desserts are as famous, if not more, than anything else on its menu.

of the best restaurants for your next Palm Springs road trip

She lived with the aunt for several years after her father died at a young age. These memories, and recipes from her grandmother, would inspire her once she began her own business. It’s the reason Porto’s has continued to thrive, well into its fifth decade of existence — an extraordinary feat for any restaurant. And it ensures that you’ll keep seeing people trotting those boxes and bags through airports across the nation. I was fortunate to conduct one of Rosa Porto’s final interviews before she died in 2019 at age 89. She told me about her hometown of Manzanillo; her love of ajiaco, a rustic soup popular in Cuba; and inspiration gleaned from years living with an aunt who loved baking and her grandmother’s recipes.

L.A.’s only Dominican restaurant introduces a family’s legacy of meaty, comforting glories

Please call restaurant directly for take-out or curbside options. Bosscat Kitchen & Libations in River Oaks serves Southern comfort food in a dining room that feels like the inside of a whiskey barrel. Our guide to the best Happy Hour food and drink specials around the city.

You generally fare better with the cream-focused cakes and desserts, like the flaky Napoleon or tres leches cake, which feels like plunging into a kiddie pool of sweet milk and sopping wet sponge. Tangy mango and guava mousses, electric jolts of mouth-puckering tang and sweetness, also are worthy of a splurge. Carrot and Parisian chocolate cakes and a mixed berry muffin offer somewhat less to write home about. Other sandwiches, including a marginally spicy chicken milanesa, with a flat, crunchy fried cutlet and melted mozzarella, are also good, if not quite at the same level.

They are divine racquetball-sized orbs of fluffy mashed potato filled with a picadillo spiced meat mixture laced with onions, peppers and what tastes like just a hint of olive and cumin. The balls are coated in breadcrumbs and fried to a deep, tawny brown. The mild crunch of the exterior yields to the silky potato-y mass, only to reward further with tender meat and mild gravy.

oporto fooding house & wine

An egg, cheese and chorizo sandwich on a crusty white Cuban roll, with a fluffy-egged omelet dotted with spiced meat, is exactly what you want in a breakfast sandwich. Porto’s version of a breakfast burrito is pleasantly hearty, a tortilla-cloaked omelet stuffed with chunks of seasoned, shredded pork, black beans and guacamole. A punchy, persuasive salsa verde goes perfectly with the wrap and allows it to thread the needle and avoid the trap of being too heavy. Torrejas, or Cuban French toast, are over-the-top rich, fat slabs of eggy, fried toast. The guava syrup accompaniment offers a lighter touch than your standard maple syrup, but every bite feels luxuriant, like the chip crumbs from the bottom of the bag.

Porto’s has become its own language, to the extent that its baked and hot foods no longer just represent Cuba — they’ve come to represent Los Angeles. Roasted pork and ropa vieja come in both sandwich and entrée form. I would recommend the latter, as you get a side of rice and black beans as well as a few tender, gently caramelized maduros, or fried plantains. They’re developed, mature, tasting of onion, bell pepper and a hint of tomato. You’ll be forgiven for thinking this dish is a Jules Verne novel — there are depths to these beans. “In the beginning,” Porto said, “we made bread.” Porto and her husband (who worked the night shift at the now-defunct Van de Kamp’s bakery), opened their first bakery in a strip mall in Silver Lake with a bank loan.

After the Cuban Revolution, “Everything changed,” she said. “When you requested to leave, they fired you from your job.” Families that asked to leave the country were marked as enemies of the state — they were called worms, or traitors to the revolution. People lost their jobs, possessions and some, like Porto’s brother, perished in work camps. “Because there were neighborhood committees.” These “committees” rooted out possible subversion — subversion like owning an illegal business.

Rosa Porto died Friday, leaving behind a husband of 64 years, children, grandchildren and legions of customers loyal to the business she created, Porto’s Bakery & Cafe. Porto’s adapted to its environs over the years — changing Los Angeles demographics and a dwindling Cuban population — and shifted its menu constantly according to evolving tastes. In doing so, the small bakery that began at Sunset and Silver Lake Boulevards in 1976 became the quintessential L.A. Restaurant — and an incredible story of American success. If that sounds a little dramatic, it speaks to the power of Porto’s, with six perpetually busy locations in the L.A.

A menu as vast as that at Porto’s — more than 100 bakery items, and dozens of sandwiches, soups and salads — would be worrisome at most places. To make an analogue, the pan-Asian bistro that serves Thai food and Chinese food and sushi never does much of it well. Whether it’s the flaky croissants or the cheesecake or the Cuban sandwiches, it’s all delicious, nearly without exception. Instead of narrowly specializing, Porto’s tries to be all things to all people — and, largely, it succeeds.

A standard butter croissant was a bit flatter than I remembered. That, a ham and cheese croissant and a chocolate twist pastry were more flaccid than flaky. My biggest surprise during recent Porto’s trips has been in the breakfast department.

To eat one is to truly grasp the concept of positive reinforcement in behavioral psychology. To eat one is to see the potential of what shepherd’s pie could have been. At Oporto Fooding House & Wine in the Fourth Ward, you can expect Portuguese food and crisp cocktails in a warm and airy environment. If you’re dining solo, grab a spot at the marble countertops shiny enough for an HGTV cameo, order some roasted chorizo and peppers, and sip on a sweet caipirinhas stuffed with lime. With some of the viennoiserie and other baked goods, I find myself in the position of having to walk back some of the praise I ladled on in my 2019 appreciation.

I never leaned on Porto’s much as an early-morning option, but I can now pronounce it to be one of my favorites in the city, especially given the increasing dearth of daytime eateries since the pandemic struck. Between 1965 and 1973, Freedom Flights brought hundreds of thousands of Cuban refugees to the shores of the United States. They relocated to California, where her husband, Raúl, had family. It didn’t take long for Cuban immigrants in the States to start asking Porto for her cakes. “In the airport when we arrived,” she said, she was approached by someone from home.

Leading L.A. vegan restaurant goes un-vegan. ‘I knew the vitriol that would come my way’

Food recalls reach highest level since the pandemic. Undeclared allergens are the biggest reason for the rise

Saladas

On reopening day, community calls the revival of Cafe Tropical a ‘triumph’

After the Cuban Revolution, “Everything changed,” she said. “When you requested to leave, they fired you from your job.” Families that asked to leave the country were marked as enemies of the state — they were called worms, or traitors to the revolution. People lost their jobs, possessions and some, like Porto’s brother, perished in work camps. “Because there were neighborhood committees.” These “committees” rooted out possible subversion — subversion like owning an illegal business.

Following her death, I wrote an effusive appreciation of Rosa Porto and the business she created. But I was curious recently about how Porto’s has sustained its menu, now slightly pared down three years into COVID, without its matriarch. It started with a French bread here, a chocolate mousse there, and experimenting with the formats of the cakes. The potato ball is as good a place as any to start when talking about Porto’s.

Windows come in many shapes besides the standard rectangular design, including squares, circles, arches, and keyholes. A beautifully shaped window functions as a work of art and can be designed to match a particular historical style. Unusual window shapes often emphasize or work around specific architectural details. Adding a source of back-lighting will ensure your stained glass masterpiece remains the beautiful focal point of your home’s entrance, no matter the time of day.

This type of glass has a special coating that helps to reflect heat back into your home during the winter and away from your home during the summer. This can help to keep your home more comfortable while still letting in plenty of natural light. Two of the most popular window styles, single- and double-hung windows, consist of two sashes inside a single frame. Implementing these concepts can aid in establishing a grand entrance with stained glass that accurately reflects your style while enhancing your home’s aesthetic. Stained glass, a timeless classic, creates a welcoming ambiance and a splash of color as one enters the home. A properly placed stained glass window in your foyer can become an inviting centerpiece.

This is further augmented by either vacuum or an insulating gas like argon in the gap. Engaging a professional for the installation can ensure safety and maximizing aesthetic appeal. It’s worth noting, proper maintenance helps preserve the beauty of stained glass; occasional gentle cleaning with a soft cloth and mild soapy water should suffice. Tempered glass, popularly known as toughened glass, is an impact resistant glass that can take high impacts and does not break easily. However, when this type of glass breaks, it usually breaks into tiny pieces, which has a low risk of causing injury. So, as far as safety is concerned, tempered glass is a great choice for your home windows.

These large, fixed-pane windows, named because they frame the outdoors like a big picture, make the most of natural light and panoramic views. Finally, on a purely aesthetic level, a garage door with glass windows looks more modern and stylish, giving a unique visual appeal to the exterior of your house. Installation of sliding patio doors/windows in the kitchen should be done by professionals to ensure precise fitting and functionality. Consider using thermal glass for better insulation, and add blinds or curtains for controlled light and privacy. Tinted glass helps to keep direct sunlight out and reduces the brightness of light, which will keep the atmosphere in the room pleasant.
